  7. How to Avoid Summer...

You Can Have Fun AND Keep the Weight Off This Summer!

Growing up in New England, summer always meant warm weather, sunny skies, swimming in the lake, cookouts, and hot fudge sundaes for dessert.

To this day, that hot fudge sundae is still my special summer treat — but somewhere along the way, I realized I couldn’t eat one a couple times every week,  like I did as a kid without it slowly catching up with me.

For a while, that left me stuck in the all-or-nothing trap: either I “was good” and skipped it completely, feeling deprived all summer, or I gave in and then felt guilty afterward.

Neither felt right.

The hack that finally changed everything was simple — I stopped treating my sundae as something to earn or apologize for, and instead I planned for it. Now I pick one day, I truly savor it, and I anchor the rest of that day with protein, water, and a long walk.

That one small shift means I still get my favorite childhood treat, I stay on track, and I never feel guilty.

Maybe that sounds familiar to you, too.

Here’s the good news: you can avoid summer weight gain and still enjoy every sunny moment.

It all starts with a simple mindset shift.

Why Progress Slips in Summer

Usually, progress is not lost because of one ice cream cone. Instead, it slips because routines get abandoned all at once. Vacations begin, schedules change, and “I’ll start again in September” becomes the plan. As a result, small skipped habits add up quietly over eight to ten weeks.

However, the occasional treat is rarely the problem. Rather, all-or-nothing thinking is. When one “off” meal is treated as a failure, the whole day often gets written off. Because of that, prevention matters far more than perfection.

The 90/10 Mindset

Instead of chasing a flawless summer, aim for consistency. With a 90/10 approach, healthy choices are made most of the time, while treats are truly enjoyed the rest of the time.
Therefore, guilt is removed from the equation, and balance becomes sustainable.

For example, dessert can still be ordered at a birthday dinner. Meanwhile, your usual protein-rich breakfast keeps your appetite steady the next morning. In this way, fun is protected and so is your progress.

One Anchor Habit Changes Everything

Additionally, one small “anchor” habit can hold your whole routine together.

A daily walk, a protein-first breakfast, or a glass of water before each meal all work well. Because these habits are simple, they are easy to keep even on busy days.

Stay Hydrated

Remember that hydration is also linked to fewer food cravings.

Dehydration can trigger food cravings by causing the brain to misinterpret thirst signals as hunger and hindering the body’s energy regulation.

To distinguish between true hunger and thirst, it is recommended to drink water and wait 10 to 15 minutes for the craving to pass. For more information on dehydration, visit the Mayo Clinic.

Plan for the Predictable Slips

Additionally, most summer slips can be predicted in advance.

Vacations, long weekends, and backyard parties are all known ahead of time.

Therefore, a quick plan can be made before each one.

For example, a workout might be moved earlier, or a lighter breakfast might be chosen on a party day.

Because these moments are handled on purpose, they never spiral. In this way, summer weight regain is prevented without any sense of restriction.

Best of all, the season is still fully enjoyed while your progress is quietly protected.

Enjoy the Season, Keep the Results

Finally, remember that balance is a skill, not a personality trait. So this summer, choose progress over perfection.
